The "System Of Car Control" contain five stages that are considered in a sequence on a approach to a hazard. You may not use all of these five stages, it will depend on the hazard. The five stages are shown below:
The information phase overlaps every other phase of the system
1. Information Giving and receiving information is one of the most important stages, and it is considered throughout the stages. Use your mirrors at the appropriate point in the system.
Use the information you have found to plan how to deal with the hazards and make plans on how you are going to deal with them.
2. Position Positioning provides some indication of your intended course. Keeping a cushion of space will enable you more time to react.
Position yourself so that you can pass the hazards safely and smoothly.
Take account of other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and children.
3. Speed Once the correct position is obtained, the appropriate speed to negotiate the hazard is selected. Usually this is achieved by braking smoothly and progressively.
4. Gear Once you have the right speed for the circumstances, engage the correct gear for that speed.
Remember to set the engine revs to match the road speed to ensure a smooth gear change.
5. Acceleration The correct degree of acceleration is used to leave the hazard safely.
Take into account of other road users, and the road and traffic conditions ahead, decide whether it is appropriate to accelerate away from the hazard.
This information is only an outline of the system.
