Many people are concerned about the IAM test, knowing what it entails and how best to prepare for it. The best way to prepare for the test it to go out with an observer.
Preparation For The IAM Test
An Observed run is simply when an Observer accompanies an Associate in the Associate's own vehicle whilst driving a pre-determined route for approximately 45 minutes. During the run, the Observer will chat to the Associate to put them at ease
At the end of the run, the Observer will perform a debrief and provide feedback based on what they have observed. This feedback is not meant to teach, but merely to point the Associate in the right direction and give them pointers to work on before the next Observed run. This information is all recorded on an Observed Run Report form, which you will be given a copy.
When your driving reaches the correct standard to pass the advanced test, your observer will help you to apply for your test. The Observer may give you a mock test so you know what may happen during your test.
When IAM in London has received your test application, the IAM examiner from your area will contact you to arrange a day and time for your test and where to meet your examiner. This will be the start point of your test.
The IAM have produced a book to help candidates prepare for the IAM Advanced Driving Test. The book called "How To Be An Advanced Driver" (shown below).
The book describes in clear,easy to understand terms and pictures what is required to achieve the Advanced Driving Test standard (including a very useful section entitled "What the Examiner Looks For"). The book is very much based on the principles of the Police books "Roadcraft", but explains exactly what is required for the IAM Test.
